Subsea Expertise on Showcase at COP28
COP28 “goes underwater” on 5 December with SUT - Society for Underwater Technology Middle East hosting a seminar at Mubarak Marine, Dubai Maritime City, focussed on the The Nippon Foundation GEBCO - General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans Seabed 2030 project. With an estimated 75% of the global seabed unmapped, especially in the southern hemisphere, the project’s key objective is to map 100% of the world’s seabed by 2030. The seminar will be led by Adrian Phillips, SUT Middle East Chairman and Stephen Hall, former SUT CEO.
As SUT states: “The ocean is the heart of our planet; feeds us, regulates our climate, and generate most of the oxygen we breathe, it covers 70% of the planet and provides 97% of the worlds water resources as well as jobs, livelihoods and economic development. And yet we know comparatively little about it …To complete the global subsea map, Seabed 2030 partner Victor Vescovo, Caladan Capital Management estimates that it requires 185 years of ship time, and around $2.6 billion – not impossible but a challenge. Marine robotic systems will be key to delivering the task, and with constantly improving platforms, sensors, sonars and bandwidth we can expect to see the task made a little easier in future years.”
Scotland’s subsea expertise is well-represented in the Middle East and Aberdeen based ROVOP provides high quality subsea inspections, repairs, maintenance or construction projects, derived from successful project execution internationally over the past decade. Backed by Bluewater private equity group and Cordiant Capital, it is now the world’s largest independent ROV provider, following a U$100m fleet investment programme.
Fast forward to February 2024, and the UK’s centre for subsea excellence, Global Underwater Hub is hosting SubseaExpo 2024 in Aberdeen. For more information, GUH’s latest news Magazine - GUH Magazine September 2023 https://lnkd.in/d87dCRCY
